My name is Christian Perez a student from City College. Here you’ll find most of my english essays from my freshmen year and will continue to add on through my process of my academic years.

Essay writing at the college level , at first I was considering what this class was all about? How can we learn more English writing? Gonna read poems or books then write a well developed essay about them? The image of that was already set in mind about the class. As soon as I heard that we were gonna start an essay already, I was stunned. I wasn’t really ready to write an essay , they are long and boring and it feels like I’m just repeating myself over and over. As I overlooked my first ever college essay , it was asking to use words I never met or probably don’t use in an essay . Some of those words like rhetorical analysis ,tone , audience, context, genre and medium. Also to use 4 different types of sources: website, magazine article ,newspaper article and scholarly article but not only from the general internet to find this. Here I found out what Cunyfirst is, a website designed to find help websites and resources for your essay. At first it was hard to navigate but at the end it was pretty helpful getting my sources in one spot that are efficient and effective. It was asking me to write a rhetoric and writing function in a social context. In other words it’s telling me to be persuasive in my writing style to use figures of speech and the techniques to convince my reader. From there it was pretty straightforward , my topic was about “The Impact Of Sleep On Academic Performance”. I was mentioning to my readers how much and how little sleep can change the flow of your work in school. Once i gather this information i broke it down into parts to make my life easier , I gathered my resources from Cuny First and from each website I would answer  its rhetorical analysis ( what was its meaning ) , the authors version of this , what audience is this aimed to , purpose of this reading , genre,  medium  and its type of tone. I would have to do this with every website like a copy and paste. It was simple and straight to the point. It was just getting your topic and trying to prove it effectively using different sources using rhetorical terms. Believe it or not I found this pretty easy. It was a matter of time to build this yet simple to me. This is when I found out essays don’t have to be hard to write. 

Now for my second essay, my Research Essay, I found it quite fun. From my last essay I learned I can make my essay’s topic fun, something I would enjoy researching and writing about. I found the format quite similar to my Rhetorical Analysis essay but this time in the shape of a research paper. I talked about “ Music Assistance in the Brain’s Mental Status”  . I needed 4 sources: 2 academic and 2 popular media. Using CunyFirst was more simple now so my research was quick. My favorite part is making my paper look like a research paper like an actual source. The images and color pallets of how it’s designed was nice. My current feelings about essays here were enjoyable and pleasant, not like in high school I had hatred for them. 

For my last essay and third essay Composition In two genres. This one was the one I had the most fun of all. All it was really asking me was to promote my research essay into genres basically. I picked a brochure and an AD. I talked about music and the brain and how those 2 work together. Picking those genres had a background info about them. The brochure is supposed to be lengthy with information and the targeted audience were elderly people since they take their time to read stuff and take their time and the brochure was talking about the concerning topic of Alzheimer’s disease. So I mentioned how learning music benefits the brain’s growth and strength by decreasing alzheimers. For the AD I wanted to make it colorful for my audience which were college students because as a college student myself reading the only necessary stuff is efficient. So it must be a quick reading yet informative and colorful. Creating this AD paper was fun. This whole 2 genre tasks was a nice experience.

In general this class was nice and smooth. I really enjoyed it. There were small little things that helped me out understand college level work like the essays, the lessons, even the free writing. The free writing was an interesting one because I never really had that in my other English classes. It helped me concentrate and take everything out of my mind. The peer review was helpful too, I got to see how my classmates wrote and their perspective in the work which had me open my ideas more. I’m content with my English essay level at the moment. I’ve gone a pretty long way and I’m happy at the level I’m at right now. Essays now seem to be easier . I found how to make them entertaining and break them down into parts for an easier and smoother writing experience. I was most greatly influenced by my dear prof. Joseph and also my tutor helped me view their perspective of the essays and fed me info on how to write which was pretty helpful. School and society made me see the bigger picture. School is interesting. I’m just starting and society is changing in a bad way and good way. It’s better to see the good way though but those influence how i write. I really see myself only getting better in my college essays down the road and I’m up for the task of writing them back to back.
