The Impact Of Sleep On Academic Performance 

Introduction  

  As a student that has just finished high school, transition to a higher education (college). They are bound to have some sort of challenges as they proceed in college. Some could be over stacking of homework others could be lack of interactions (new friends) . It could also be how they feel emotionally and not locking in with their thoughts or goals to accomplish. For these reasons it could be the cause of many students not being able to sleep, to rest easily and getting ready for a brand-new day

Summary: The less college students sleep, the worse their grades, study finds. By Teddy Amenabar Published in Washinton Post. In this newspaper the author writes about how many students lack sleep in their first year of college. How the average time for teenagers is “eight to 10 hours of sleep. For those 18 to 25 years old…” (Creswell) But those numbers are getting cut off to 7-8 hours now. 

Rhetorical Situation: The newspaper was written to show studies of how students sleep and how it affects grades. The leading of sleep deprivation can cause one’s students GPA to decrease. Either from a student over stress of class or overstudying for midterms.  

Purpose: The main purpose of this newspaper was to inform other students on how more sleep could be helpful for studies. All thought studying overnight for a class is good Creswell stated that “Sleep, especially undisturbed sleep, helps the brain process and retain information it has learned” “having trouble staying focused and learning in college classrooms” . This clarifies how the author supports sleep could be beneficial for better grades. 

Audience: The newspaper was published in “The Washington Post” on February 2023. In their website they introduce more articles/newspapers like this subject of students. They also later one help recommend how to fix problems like these. In a specific category called Well+Being with categories like having healthy eating habits or prepping for a new school year.  

Genre: The Washington Post is a daily newspaper that covers more than just political news. One of the most trusted sources out there and is aimed in daily American issues/topics. Discussing about everyday life resources keeping everyone up to date 

Stance: The Author is trying to inform most students that sleep is important mostly as they grow up as its a process of letting the brain rest and learn of the current information that was gained in the day. Also tell us how it could be the cause of a lower GPA “that every lost hour of average nightly sleep at the start of an academic term was associated with a 0.07-point drop in a student’s end-of-term GPA…” (Teddy) .

This website describes the author’s point of view in homework as they themselves as a senior lecturerr. Describe how she conducted a student survey asking them their thoughts in homework and how its impacts them. Some of the answers were “56 percent of the students considered homework a primary source of stress..” Others stated that it was causing health problem and not able to give them free them.  

Rhetorical Situation: States that the use of homework is too much and its affecting lots of students. Too much of it does not benefit the way students want it to be. Homework is more of a obligation than something to learn of and adapt it.  

Purpose: The purpose of this website is to inform not just students but to the education system and see what the over staking homework is leading to the new future of students. The author saying, “[they] found that too much homework can dimmish its effeteness and can be counterproductive” (Pope). That its stress of the work is affecting sleeping schedules which students say, “their homework load led to sleep deprivation and other health problems”. Some other side effects were headaches, exhaustion, weight loss and stomach problems.  

Audience: This website is aimed at student’s parents and educators. This was published in the website articles section. In the Standford Report is a university-based website informing others in school subjects and globally. As they explain on their website “Stories to keep you informed and inspired, from one of the world’s leading research and teaching institution’s” . Since they are a school-based website, they are targeting students and educators with their upcoming news  

Genre: Stanford Report is a website with information in school studies containing a variety of school related subjects like law, social studies, business, and economics. Have new articles published in a daily matter informing many readers of what is new and keeping people up to date. 

Stance: The author is aiming how too much work is demonstrating an effect in students. Arguing the cause of homeworking being to much for one and that its having health side affects one of them being sleep deprived and to much of its is no good. Not just that but also having less time to ones self and less time to do extra curriculars.

Summary: Jornal Of Adolescence By Michelle A. Short talks about the usage of little sleep and led to mood swings out of sudden. Also, the sudden rise of daytime sleepiness or any form of depression. Yet another survey with sleep analysis testing how much sleep adolescents get says “less than 6 h 45 m sleep duration and more than 2 h bedtime delay on weekends) also reported greater levels of daytime sleepiness, more depressed mood, and lower grade”. That these mood swings would cause a mental health issue, one of the major ones being depression.  

Rhetorical Situation: Explains how lack of sleep could lead to a major consequence which many include of “sleepiness, fatigue, impairments in academic functioning, poor working memory performance and memory consolidation, depression, anxiety, risk-taking, suicidal ideation”. How this is a negative thing to deal with as a student.  

Purpose: The author wrote this scholarly article to further explain more the more side effects of loss of sleep that are side effects one being that it can cause a major mood swing. Describing that the more sleep one gets the better rested one can be calling it Circadian chronotype. As they explain in the article” refers to an individual’s tendency toward greater activity and alertness at certain times of the day and is underpinned by features of endogenous biological rhythms”. This is the good benefit of more sleep but then many of the students don’t get as much of it which causes them to feel so many emotions and so little effort in work.  

Audience: This article aims to the students for them to see what another major impact is in one’s sleep deprivation. Not just how much things can go wrong. This article explains well to student the leading consequences of not so much sleep and informs well of it. 

Genre/; Its highly informative and gets variety details of the test they have done in students with sleep and gives helpful info in the causes of it. This is targeted at students and lets the reader know to be aware of these types of issues.  

Stance: The author argues that the lack of sleep can be unbelievably bad and shows stats of how it is very impactful. How students have depression and other sicknesses. Not just showing how college students get affected in this but in a variety of grades and their side effects later to compare it to the one with one’s well-deserved sleep.
